Hello, my name is Eric VanDeMark. I grew up in Elkhart County in Indiana. I was in the Scouting program and earned the rank of Eagle. I am a graphic designer with an interest in history and the pop culture of art. My hobbies include illustrating and video games.
As of 2022, I have taken an interest in performing voice-over work that includes character VA whether it be dubbing over the original dialogue from another country, original voice-over, or commercial (please see the Voice-Over Section).
I earned Bachelor’s Degree in New Media with a concentration in graphic design earned through Indiana University-South Bend. My skills include photography, photo-editing, filming, video editing, page layout, and design, and some web design as well. I have experience in using the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. I am also familiar with the Microsoft Office Suite along with other software and I can work in both Mac and Windows environments. I have knowledge in other programs in other programs as well. If there isn’t anything I don’t know I generally pick up on it very quickly. I am very technically inclined toward software.
Artist Statement
My interest in media is very broad, ranging from the printed advertisements of past decades to cutting-edge digital multimedia. I am fascinated by the evolution of art, the changing relationship between art and advertisement, and the effect that nostalgia has played in both.
The changes that lead to nostalgia and appreciation that of the things that we had then and now. Evolution is both not only by design but also with a purpose or a message that expresses that evolution. That is how I see art.
In advertisements as well, there has always been a message, but the art and storytelling are the only things that have changed with that message with a few exceptions. It is interesting to see what was socially acceptable such as an old Flintstones ad for cigarettes on television is hardly acceptable beyond the occasional magazine ad. And some things, since their inception, still are advertised to this very day. It is a new take on style added or refined on the substance.
The Coca-Cola Company, for example, has always had success and they probably would have without even half the advertising they put money into. They can introduce a new product and not use ads and the customers that they attract daily at their local supermarkets can check it out. But when they introduce flavored beverages, they often treat it like a special event. It may have been necessary for its inception, but now they do it just to express what their beverages are all about. There are some advertisements that gave certain products popularity again. For example, the Old Spice products never really stood out with the exception of the occasional product sponsor in a movie or TV episode. It wasn’t until recent years that their advertisements went a different route in their audience.
It is the storytelling that is brought by not only its concept but by the art and design the product is trying to pitch to the audience. Whether it can be novels, photography, theatre, movies, video games, and everything that is created for the sole purpose to draw our attention with its storytelling is art.
